On April 15, 2023, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Director of the Office of the Central Commission for Foreign Affairs Wang Yi met with German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock in Beijing.

Noting the high degree of stability and continuity of China's foreign policy, Wang Yi said China will continue to firmly pursue the independent foreign policy and play its role as a responsible major country in promoting world peace and development. China will stay committed to the win-win strategy of opening up, and follow the trend of the times toward globalization. China will resolutely safeguard the authority of the United Nations and the international order formed after World War II, oppose unilateralism, power politics and bullying acts, and promote greater democracy in international relations. Noting the broad common understandings and convergence of interests between China and Germany, Wang Yi said that China is ready to work with Germany to strengthen exchanges and communication, enhance mutual understanding, make good preparations for a new round of China-Germany inter-governmental consultation, jointly address climate change and other global challenges, promote the sound development of bilateral relations, and send a positive signal to the unstable world.

Wang Yi pointed out that Taiwan's return to China is an important part of the post-WWII international order. The attempt of the "Taiwan independence" forces on the island to undermine the status quo across the Taiwan Strait has put peace in the Strait in jeopardy. Resolutely rejecting "Taiwan independence" separatist activities is a must in maintaining stability across the Taiwan Strait. Noting China’s support for Germany's reunification, Wang Yi said he hopes and believes that Germany will also support the great cause of peaceful reunification of China.

Baerbock said it is very important for China, a permanent member of the UN Security Council, and Germany, a major country in Europe, to strengthen dialogue and communication. Noting many common interests between Germany and China, Baerbock said Germany is ready to work with China to increase interactions and exchanges, enhance mutual understanding, expand cooperation in such fields as economy and trade, tourism, and people-to-people and cultural exchanges, jointly maintain the smooth and unimpeded flow of global trade, and promote continued growth of Germany-China relations. Germany understands how important and sensitive the Taiwan question is for China, and stays committed to the one-China policy.

The two sides also had an extensive exchange of views on the current international and regional issues.
